Report from Custodian of Haughland House

2007 was the year of the introduction of our Website which has helped tremendously in reaching many more people, to which our grateful thanks goes to John Wilkinson our webmaster for his patience, and unfailing good nature and efficiency.

Also we have been fortunate to get an Awards for All grant of £3500 to wards repairs to the Smithy, and the piano, and Tutors fees and expenses. This enabled us to extend the community side of our programme which we call “ Community Art, Music and wellbeing programme”. Activities so far have been a 6 week Yoga session, A singing Retreat, and Weekend Retreat of Dances of Universal Peace.

Also during this year a group of folk on Community service have been helping with the garden, the repairs to the roof of the Smithy and dyke building.

Another innovation this year has been an 8 session Meditation course “Living from the Heart” which has attracted people to Haughland House that hadn’t been before.

I feel we have had a lively year, even though bed spaces were down this year we have had more local people attending Day Retreats, the weekly meditation sessions, and the crafty circle, I think this is the way it might evolve, where the majority of our earned income coming from the local community.

However donations and grants and fundraising are still the life blood of the trusts funds. The “shop” at Haughland House continues to sell cards and candle holders and knitted goods, and we organise fundraising events, which are well supported.

I feel this year we have been consolidating our position here in Shapinsay as a community resource with a difference, and generally putting ourselves on the map, and networking through the very appreciative visitors who have enjoyed some time with us.

As I write 4 enquiries and 2 bookings for Retreats have been received which has to be a good start to 2008.
